What changed in SQL Format from one version to the next, newest first. It covers changes you can see as a user: the formatter, its options, languages, pages and privacy. Maintenance work behind the scenes is summarized briefly.
Version 2.4
2.4.5 (2026-11-01)
- Visit session cookie. The session identifier cookie no longer expires after 90 days. It has no fixed expiry date and stays until you clear site data from your browser. Details are on the privacy page.
2.4.2 (2026-11-01)
- Visit session cookie. After you choose "Accept all" or "Essential only" in the cookie banner, the site sets a 90-day session identifier cookie. The same identifier is used on every page you open and only groups visits in the site's own visit counter. Until you choose, that page is not added to the counter. Details are on the privacy page.
2.4.1 (2026-10-28)
- EXISTS and NOT.
EXISTSandNOT EXISTSare kept and laid out asAND NOT EXISTS (with the subquery indented below.NOTnow stays inline, as inWHERE NOT x,x NOT IN (…)andNOT NULL, instead of moving to a line of its own. - Leading commas everywhere. With commas before,
CASEexpressions,CREATE TABLEcolumn definitions and CTE names get their comma in front (,CASE WHEN,,amount NUMERIC(12, 2),,ranked AS (), and items inside CTEs and subqueries get the right indentation. Words are no longer glued together. - Line wrapping. When maximum columns breaks a line after a comma, the comma stays at the end of the line. Lines are never broken inside string literals, quoted identifiers or comments, and comment text can no longer end up as code.
- Keyword case and names. Keyword case no longer changes quoted identifiers (
"Order Id", backtick and[bracket]names) or the parts of qualified names such ast.month. More keywords follow the setting, among themPRIMARY KEY,FOREIGN KEY,REFERENCES,CONSTRAINT,DEFAULT,INDEX,CAST,LIKE,ILIKE,FETCH FIRSTand the window frame words. - Tabs. Tabs inside string literals and quoted identifiers are kept as typed. Other tabs still become indent spaces.
- Operators and casts. PostgreSQL operators such as
->>,->,#>>,@>,<@,&&,:=and=>are no longer split apart, and casts are written without spaces, as inid::TEXT. - Quoted names and arrays. MySQL backtick names and SQL Server bracket names such as
[dbo].[orders]stay intact, and array literals and subscripts are written asARRAY['x']andtags[1]. - INSERT, upsert and DDL.
INSERT INTO t (andCREATE TABLE t (stay on one line,ON CONFLICT (a, b) DO UPDATEandDO NOTHINGare kept on one line, and theSETandRETURNINGlists put their next items on indented lines. Type parameters stay inline, as inNUMERIC(12, 2)andVARCHAR(20). - Window functions and arithmetic.
OVER (stays on the line of its function, with the window specification indented below. A multiplication by a short group stays on one line, as inprice * (1 - discount). - Variables, foreign keys and nesting. SQL Server and MySQL variables such as
@totaland@@ROWCOUNTstay whole, foreign-key actions such asON DELETE CASCADEstay on the column line, a semicolon after a closing parenthesis stays on that line, and lists insideOVER (PARTITION BY a, b), scalar subqueries and subqueries afterTHENorEXISTSkeep their indentation. - Documentation. The guides and option pages were updated to match, with new formatter-produced examples for
NOT EXISTS, upserts, JSON operators, quoted names and leading commas in CTEs.
2.4.0
- Guides. New long-form guides on SQL formatting and style, including a SQL style guide, formatting complex queries, leading vs trailing commas, PostgreSQL formatting and a migration formatting checklist.
- Option documentation. A documentation page for each formatter option, with examples produced by the formatter itself.
- New site pages. A FAQ, an About page, terms of use and this changelog.
- Language addresses. Each language now has its own path, such as
/pt-br/for Portuguese and/es/for Spanish, while English stays at the root. Old links that used?lang=redirect to the new addresses, so bookmarks keep working. - Page titles and descriptions. Every page has its own title and description, which makes the pages easier to tell apart in browser tabs and search results.
- Page not found. A custom 404 page that points you back to the formatter and the main sections instead of a generic error.
Version 2.3
2.3.11 (2026-10-19)
- The language selector shows the flag of the current language, and each entry in the language menu has its flag next to the name.
2.3.10 (2026-10-18)
- On your first visit, the site opens in your browser's preferred language when it is one of the sixteen supported languages. A language you pick yourself is still remembered and takes priority.
2.3.9 (2026-10-18)
- The "Site" section of the menu has a link to calcular.online. Because it leads to a different site, a confirmation appears first, and the link opens in a new tab so the SQL in the formatter is kept.
2.3.8 (2026-10-17)
- The default indent is now 4 spaces instead of 2 when you have not chosen a value, for example on your first visit or when the field is left empty. A value you choose, including 2, is kept. See indent spaces.
2.3.4 (2026-09-30)
- Google Analytics measures aggregate traffic. Analytics cookies are set only after you choose "Accept all" in the cookie banner; until then it runs without cookies. The privacy page has a new section on audience measurement.
2.3.3 (2026-09-29)
- The cookie banner offers a choice between "Accept all" and "Essential only", and a "Cookie preferences" link in the footer lets you change it later.
- Ads are non-personalized unless you accept all cookies.
- The privacy page has a new section on advertising, with links to opt out of personalized ads.
2.3.1 and 2.3.2 (2026-09-29)
- The site shows ads served by Google AdSense.
- A sitemap with every language version of each page helps search engines find the right page for your language.
Other 2.3 releases
- Versions 2.3.0, 2.3.5 to 2.3.7, 2.3.12 and 2.3.13 contain server and maintenance improvements with no visible change to the formatter. The privacy page was updated where they affected visit statistics.
Versions 2.0 to 2.2
2.1.0 and 2.2.0 (2026-09-29)
- Improvements to how the site is installed and upgraded on the server, so new versions can be rolled out safely. Nothing changed in the formatter itself.
2.0.1 (2026-09-29)
- A rebuilt formatter page: an options toolbar, a monospace editor with line numbers, Copy and Clear buttons, and a status bar with lines, characters and the cursor position.
- Press Ctrl+Enter, or ⌘+Enter on a Mac, to format without reaching for the mouse.
- In
ORDER BYandGROUP BY, each item is now kept apart from itsASCorDESC, andASC,DESCandNULLS FIRST/NULLS LASTfollow the keyword case option. - A refreshed layout: a fixed top bar, a sidebar menu and a cookie banner at the bottom of the page.
